Yonkers Partners in Education (YPIE) Replicates its College Success Model in Jersey. City, NJ

YPIE partners with the Jersey City Public Schools to launch a new site, YPIE Jersey City, bringing college readiness and access to Jersey City students

YONKERS, NEW YORK, July 26, 2023: Yonkers Partners in Education (YPIE), a nonprofit organization that prepares students for college success, announced today that it will launch a site in Jersey City, New Jersey, its first site outside of Yonkers.

Since 2007, by forging deep ties with the community, city leaders, and the Yonkers Public Schools, YPIE has prepared thousands of students for success in college and the 21st-century workforce. YPIE confronts the challenges of low-income, underfunded school districts by providing families with equitable access to the critical tools and services necessary for college success.

YPIE currently provides college readiness, access, and persistence services to 1,200 students per year, approximately 25% of the high school students in the Yonkers Public Schools. Through a personal, multi-layered, and well-tuned service delivery approach, YPIE achieves promising results toward closing the gaps in college readiness, access, and graduation.

“The experience YPIE has gained in Yonkers, together with the data showing the difference it can make in the lives of public school children, has led us to take our unique college success model further, starting this fall in Jersey City," said David Westin, YPIE Board Chair. "Over the next three years, YPIE will re-double its efforts in Yonkers, while simultaneously replicating our program in a new post-industrial city with student demographics like those in Yonkers."

In fall 2023, YPIE will be offering its services to students in Jersey City, which was selected because of its similar characteristics and proximity to YPIE’s founding location in Yonkers, New York.

“We focused on identifying a city similar in size and demographics to Yonkers, that has a real absence of equitable services for students, close geographical proximity to Yonkers, and a school district looking to partner to ensure more students have access to a college degree,” stated Ellen Cutler Levy, YPIE Senior Strategy Advisor.

YPIE is currently hiring a Site Director and College Advisors to launch YPIE Jersey City and plans to recruit 9th-grade students in fall 2023 and 11th-grade students in spring 2024. Seed funding has been secured and YPIE looks forward to fostering partnerships with the community, higher education institutions, business and government leaders, and donors.

“YPIE's evidence-based model is ready to help even more first-generation students attain post-secondary education on a path to economic self-sufficiency,” stated Sam Wallis, YPIE Executive Director. “We are thrilled to be replicating our college success model beyond Yonkers to ensure students in Jersey City have the same opportunities in college and beyond.”
