YPIE Coronavirus Update

Updated: Mar 26, 2020

We deeply care about the health and safety of our students and everyone in the YPIE community.

Update March 26, 2020

Letter from Sam Wallis, YPIE Executive Director

Dear YPIE Community,

At this unprecedented time, we are thinking about everyone in our YPIE family and hoping for everyone’s health and safety.

We are especially thinking about our YPIE students and families, who are experiencing this crisis in so many ways. Underserved communities are often the hardest hit during moments like these.

Many of our students are forced to push pause on their academic dreams as they put immediate concerns first: access to healthcare and reliable food sources, financial obligations, and access to technology to support e-learning.

The YPIE team has responded quickly and seamlessly to support students by providing these services through phone calls, texts, and video chats:

So what comes next? As we look ahead, we will continue to adapt YPIE’s work to students’ new reality. We will remain true to our ultimate goal of ensuring that our students are graduating from college as a means to upward economic mobility.

To get there, our priorities in the coming months are to help YPIE students:

  • Remain on track academically and towards degree attainment

  • Access critical resources and mental health supports

  • Engage in purposeful activities to make this time meaningful

We deeply appreciate the support of everyone -- especially our volunteers -- who has stepped up to continue supporting students remotely. It has been so inspiring seeing the photos of video chats and remote learning, which you can see here.

Now, even as we’re socially distanced, our YPIE community feels tighter and more supportive than ever.

Stay well and keep moving forward.

With gratitude,

Sam Wallis, Executive Director

Update: March 17, 2020

We are following updates from New York State and Westchester County Health Departments regarding COVID-19 (Coronavirus), and the recommendations from Yonkers Public Schools regarding their status and safety precautions.

Yonkers Public Schools has announced that they will be closed until March 31st, with the possibility that that will be extended. The YPIE College Zone and YPIE Office will remain closed during that time.

Whether in high school or college, now more than ever, YPIE students need our attention as they navigate this challenging time. Our #1 priority number is helping our students through this time through one-on-one chats.

YPIE College Zone

  • The YPIE College Zone is currently closed and Saturday morning SAT Prep is canceled until further notice. Students will be able to use Khan Academy to continue their preparation independently, and can discuss study plans and progress with the YPIE staff.

  • If anything changes, we will update this page and send messages to all students and parents by email and Remind. Please join the parent Remind group @ypiefamily for up to the minute updates.

YPIE College Centers in the YPS High Schools

  • While Yonkers Public Schools are closed, YPIE Staff are working with students by phone or video conference. YPIE Staff will coordinate scheduling meetings with students.

YPIE Volunteers

  • YPIE Volunteers and Coaches are meeting with their students only by phone or video conference.

  • Meetings for new YPIE Scholars with their YPIE Graduation Coaches will be rescheduled after we receive more information from the state, county, and school district.

  • Please see our YPIE Volunteer page for more information and resources.

YPIE Events and Trainings

  • We are currently evaluating all near term events and trainings, and looking at options for video conference.

  • The YPIE Education Summit on March 27th with Paul Tough has been postponed, with hopes to reschedule as circumstances permit.

YPIE Office

  • All YPIE Office staff are working remotely. You may contact a member of our staff by calling 914-377-4882.
