YonkersReads!

The need for YPIE's literacy initiatives is greater than ever. In Yonkers, 73% of children are living at or below the national poverty level.

Through our YonkersReads! initiative, 8,500 K-3rd grade students—in all 29 Yonkers elementary schools— receive a bag with books to read at home each week, accompanied by bi-lingual instructional materials for parents and caregivers. Upon returning the bag, each child receives different titles for the following week. To date, YPIE has delivered two rounds of books to all Yonkers elementary schools (nearly 17,000 books).

Books are donated by businesses, families, and individuals who purchase them online through the YPIE website. You, too, can buy a book and help Yonkers children keep reading. Why is literacy so important? Learn more »

"Last year, I was in the highest reading group and I think this was because I had lots of books that I could read, so that I got better. I LOVE to read and it was so great to get new books that I could take home every week."
