Spring 2010Volume 2, Issue 2
Yonkers Partners in Education is bursting with news - and it's only April!  Already in 2010, we have opened a new College Center, been honored with two community awards, launched a new Latino family outreach initiative, participated in a worldwide literacy event, and received funding from several large foundations.

We are excited to share our progress with you and look forward to an exciting spring in Yonkers.

This is the "crown jewel of the building," said Principal Ralph Vigliotti, referring to the new state-of-the-art YPIE College Center at Yonkers High School, an International Baccalaureate World School.

Thanks to a generous grant from national real estate company Related Companies, YPIE is on its way to fulfilling its vision of operating a full-service Center at every Yonkers high school and helping students navigate the road to college.

Yonkers Children Read Aloud

What if everyone in the world could read? How could Yonkers students help make this happen?

ChildOn March 3, children in all Yonkers pre-K through fifth grade classes joined students around the world in the first "World Read Aloud Day," thanks to support from YPIE and the Yonkers Public Schools.

YPIE Receives Two Community Awards
YPIE Board Member Olga Luz Tirado and YPIE Executive Director Wendy Nadel receive the award from LATYN's President Julia Mitchell
LATYN award

The greatest affirmation of the impact of our work is recognition from the Yonkers community. This spring, YPIE will receive two awards:

  • The Ganza Award from LATYN, a organization of Latino administrators, teachers, and CSEA members, for the important work we are doing in the Latino community.
  • A community service award from HRCA, the Hudson River Community Association.
We share these two awards with our many partners and volunteers in the Yonkers community, without whom our programs would not exist.
