YPIE Celebrates Grand Opening of College Center at Lincoln High School

(September 22, 2009 Yonkers, NY) After Entergyopening part-time last spring, the College Center at Lincoln High School officially welcomed students to a central hub of opportunity with a ribbon cutting ceremony September 22, 2009. Entergy’s investment in the future of Yonkers public school students made the Center possible.

The Lincoln High School College Center, which provides valuable resources to students that help them navigate the road to college, is the second full time program to open in less than a year. The centers at Lincoln and Roosevelt High School, which opened in November 2008, offer students a range of college planning seminars and services, including helping students prepare college applications, resumes, and essays and assisting in the complex task of completing financial aid forms and securing scholarships.

Yonkers Partners in Education is driving the College Center initiative in Yonkers Public Schools by forging strategic partnerships that combine resources and increase opportunity for the District’s 25,000 students. A third full service College Center is scheduled to open at Yonkers High School later this fall.

  • Entergy's Vice-President for Operations Joseph DeRoy (right) shared ribbon cutting honors with Yonkers Public Schools Superintendent Bernard P. Pierorazio, Lincoln High School Principal Edwin Quezada and Board of Education President Bernadette Dunne.
  • Richard Fitzgerald, Chairman of the YPIE Board of Directors
  • With the help of a YPIE advisor, students like Jessenia Caquias are already leveraging the center’s resources to narrow down their “apply-to” list, identify application and financial aid deadlines and do the work of a high school senior preparing for college.
  • Lincoln High School students had the opportunity to become acquainted with the College Center when it opened part time in May, They wasted no time whatsoever taking advantage of the world of opportunity now at their fingertips.
  • Strategic private-public partnerships are helping YPIE fulfill its vision of opening a full-service College Center at every Yonkers high school.
