The Power of Family Stories

Want to see second and third grade students writing their own stories? Then stop by one of YPIE’s Family Story Power classes, now being offered at seven different sites throughout Yonkers, and see the power of children and their families reading and writing together. The children are so excited to learn and their families are thrilled to participate in this warm and supportive environment.

What’s unique about the Family Story Power classes is the opportunity for parents and children to work side-by-side and learn at the same time. Families so rarely have time to enjoy positive educational moments together; these 90-minute sessions offer a special setting for them to share an experience reading and writing together. The classes are held at locations that are familiar to the families, such as their local church or community center. Parents who may have had little involvement in their schools are happy to participate in these comfortable settings. Often, they bring other siblings to join in the process.

“Family Story Power teaches parents and children to communicate through literacy," says Program Coordinator Bettina Weil. “They discuss books, ideas, their values and their culture. Regardless of their level of education or background, families come together to read and talk about a story, and then learn to tell their own stories. It is fascinating to see the growth of the participants in just twelve weeks.”

Everyone benefits from this program: the students, their parents, and even the facilitators. “It was a privilege to serve the community and I really enjoyed myself,” noted Silvia Lopez, one of the facilitators. After completing the class last Fall, Rubelina, a parent, commented, "Thank you so much. With you, I had the opportunity to take the time to read and write."
