High School Journalism Program

Yonkers Student Grapevine: From Our Point of View

Yonkers Partners in Education’s Journalism Program provides high school students with the opportunity to write and publish a monthly newspaper. This innovative program helps students develop skills in journalism and writing, and also provides valuable real-world experiences for them to include on college applications and essays.

This city-wide program for Yonkers high school students was created through a three-way partnership between Rising Publications, publisher of YonkersRising and funder of the program, the Yonkers Public Schools, and Yonkers Partners in Education. Students produce a monthly insert to  YonkersRising that includes hard news, spotlight interviews, sports stories, photographs, and a range of special interest articles highlighting their schools. The student-named Yonkers Student Grapevine: From Our Point of View is distributed to over 40,000 readers each month, including all 24,000 families in the Yonkers school district and readers of the weekly newspaper.

In addition to contributing to the Yonkers Student Grapevine, selected students have been offered paid internships to work at Rising Publications. So not only does YPIE's Journalism program provide students with in-school enrichment, it opens the door to potential career opportunities.

"The experience of serving as a student reporter on the Yonkers Student Grapevine helped me to become open-minded as a writer, stick to strict deadlines, work as a team with my fellow reporters and improve my writing skills."
