YPIE College and Career Advisor
High School (TBD)
Position Responsibilities:
- Build and maintain an inspiring YPIE College and
Career Center in the high school, equipped with computer databases,
college and career exploration software, college catalogs and
videos, etc. that will enable students to explore post secondary
options.
- Work with school staff and students to enhance
the college-going culture at the school and increase the diversity
of colleges attended by students.
- Serve as the school’s site manager for the
web-based Naviance college and career planning and navigation
program – managing the school’s site and orienting staff, students,
and parents to the program.
- Assist students in completing their “Do What You
Are” personality profile and career inventory, researching post
secondary options, and building a personal portfolio for students in
9th-12th grade using Naviance.
- Provide advice on college and other post
secondary options and opportunities and what is needed to attain
these.
- Conduct parent workshops to explain the college
process and encourage their participation.
- Develop parent/student workshops on financial aid
and scholarship opportunities for college.
- Create and implement a schedule of classroom
presentations on college/post-secondary-related topics.
- Ensure that students understand and prepare for
standardized tests: PSAT, SAT, ACT.
- Host college representatives to speak to students
in groups or college fair venues.
- Use existing network of college admissions
directors to increase the diversity of colleges students are exposed
to and attend.
- Host YPIE Speakers Bureau members to speak to
students in groups about career-related or other inspirational
topics necessary for college and work success.
- Organize and chaperone college tours and field
trips that will expose students to college and other options.
- Manage volunteers who will be available to assist
students in the YPIE College and Career Center.
- Participate in YPIE College Advisor monthly
meetings and professional development opportunities and other YPIE
events.
Skills/Experience
- Masters in counseling
- NY State certification in counseling
- Minimum of two years experience as a high school guidance
counselor
- Prior experience in higher education, vocational education
programs, or financial aid a plus
- Prior experience with Naviance
- Experience working with an inner-city population
- Excellent organizational skills
- Knowledge of Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
- Spanish Fluency
Salary: Commensurate with experience, plus benefits. (Vacation: most school vacation
weeks and six weeks in the summer.)
