Education Summit 2009 Highlights America’s Promise to Keep Kids on Graduation Track
Yonkers youth were well represented at last Friday’s Education Summit, co-hosted by the Yonkers Public Schools, Yonkers Partners in Education (YPIE) and America’s Promise Alliance Dropout Prevention. Public dignitaries from the city, county and state showed up to contribute to the conversation of dropout prevention, but the true guests of honor were the several dozen Yonkers public high school students who presented, performed and offered great insight during the breakout sessions that marked the mid-morning events. more

Nonprofit gives 9,000 books to Yonkers K-3 pupils
A nonprofit delivered 9,000 donated books to 292 of the city's public school classrooms yesterday as part of a children's literacy program. Children in the Yonkers public schools' kindergarten through third-grade classes were given a package with a book and other materials for parents about the importance of reading with a child. more

Private Aid Sought for Public Schools
As the Yonkers public schools emerge from years of financial shortfalls and acrimony over desegregation and cutbacks, the school district, the state's fourth largest, is now looking to the private sector to assist its campaign to improve student achievement. School officials and local business and city leaders dined on spinach-and-wild-mushroom frittatas last Tuesday morning at X2O Xaviars on the Hudson while listening to Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg of New York talk about his city's partnerships with the business community. New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg urged Yonkers residents to be bold in their efforts to reshape public education during a fundraising visit yesterday. Bloomberg spoke at the Yonkers Public Library's Riverfront branch as part of an education summit organized by the Yonkers Partners in Education, a private nonprofit that raises money to enhance public education in Yonkers. A breakfast fundraiser before Bloomberg's speech collected an estimated $35,000 to $40,000, according to Wendy Nadel, the nonprofit's executive director. more

Yonkers education summit to feature speech by Bloomberg
A $500-a-plate breakfast featuring New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg will launch a nonprofit organization's 2008 fundraising drive for Yonkers schools. Yonkers Partners in Education will host the Jan. 15 breakfast and education summit at the Yonkers Public Library's Riverfront Branch. About 400 city residents are invited to attend the post-breakfast event that will feature an address by Bloomberg, followed by work sessions where community representatives will discuss how to improve education in the city. more
