YPIE College Centers

A key way to improve college access is to provide the services of college advisors, much like those who provide private services to more affluent families. Towards this end, YPIE is well on its way to opening College Centers in each Yonkers high school. As of February 2010, YPIE College Centers are open on a full-time basis at Roosevelt, Lincoln, and Yonkers High Schools, and on a part-time basis at Riverside and Gorton High Schools.

To assist students and families in successfully navigating the college admissions process, the College Centers provide:

  • Designated space furnished to inspire an attitude of success. Centers are equipped with computers, online databases, college-tracking software, catalogs, videos, and areas for college visits/meetings.

  • One-on-one support from an on-site YPIE College Advisor on the college admission, acceptance, and selection processes.

  • Financial aid and scholarship assistance to educate both parents and students about aid and scholarship opportunities, making college more accessible.

  • Opportunities to meet with college and university admissions officers.

  • College exploration seminars for parents and students at local Westchester colleges where YPIE has existing partnerships. Seminars are delivered by students, professors, and business leaders who know what it takes to be successful in college and the working world.

  • Bus tours to colleges and universities to expose students to a variety of college options.
