"The most important thing for me was self confidence.
I thought I wouldn't get into any college and I got accepted to my first choice."

Enabling College Access for Yonkers High School Students

Funded in part by the Ronald McDonald House Charities, YPIE SAT Prep is currently providing full scholarships to 300 low income high school juniors and seniors to take the internationally respected Kaplan course, which provides the information and tools needed for Yonkers students to increase their scores on the SAT and thereby increase their chances of attending the college of their choice.

YPIE SAT Prep was offered in the fall of 2007 and continues to be offered throughout the spring of 2008 to sixty students at each of the five high schools in Yonkers –a total of 300 students. Most students are high school juniors, but incoming seniors are being offered the course in the early fall to prepare for the October SAT exam. The courses includes eight classroom sessions and four practice tests administered throughout the twelve week session.

Full scholarships for the course are being offered to students who qualify, but those who are not eligible for the complete scholarship are able to take the course for a reduced fee of $350 – roughly one third of the Kaplan retail price of $1,099. These partial scholarships were provided to all students in the Yonkers public schools through the generosity of Kaplan Test Prep.

First Session of YPIE SAT Prep Scores Big

For Charlyn Brea, a 2008 graduate of Lincoln High School, jumping over 400 points from her first PSAT test might be her ticket to an Ivy League college. And for Dawrin Araujo, a 2008 graduate of Saunders Technical and Trades High School, his hope of attending his top choice college might not be just a dream with his 350 point increase.

The experiences of these students is proof that offering a low or no cost program like YPIE SAT Prep is a key part of the journey to college and a successful life.  But without YPIE SAT Prep for many students from Yonkers the journey is not possible because they would not have access to SAT preparatory programs, which often cost upwards of $1,000.

As 250 high school juniors go through the YPIE SAT Prep class in spring, 2008, their college fate is to be determined.  Stay tuned to see their results!

“I am very grateful that my son, Nicholas, has been able to receive a scholarship for the SAT course;  I am sure that this will help make his dreams come true.” —Evelyn Rivera, Yonkers High School Parent
